Synopsis

The ability to convey thoughts, novelties and ideas clearly, unambiguously and confidently is a fundamental necessity of professionals. With the host of presentation aids available -- such as PowerPoint, multimedia, props and visualisers -- one needs to properly integrate them with his or her presentation style to produce impactful presentations.

The aim of this course is to address and improve presentation skills from two angles:

  • Learning best practices to follow -- and pitfalls to avoid -- in creating effective presentation slides
  • Learning lively and confident presentation styles to maximize the conveyance of thoughts, novelties and ideas; and leaving a good, lasting impression on your audience

This course concentrates on the practical knowledge to allow participants to achieve the following learning outcomes. Upon completing the course, participants would be able to:
  • Create impactful, concise presentation slides with proper titling, wording, diagrams, layout, animation and colour schemes
  • Properly structure presentations to constantly entice audience
  • Present confidently with suitable body language, audience interaction, gesturing and eye contact
  • Deliver presentations in a timely manner and handle questions

Prerequisite

Participants should have good command of English and have working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint. Participants should submit a short presentation before course commencement.

Course methodology

This course is presented in a workshop style, with case studies and pre-work to illustrate the concepts taught. The emphasis is placed on the participation in practicing the skills taught during the workshop.

Course structure

Each participant would deliver their presentation and solicit feedback from the audience and instructor; followed by the coverage of these topics:
  • Creating suitable presentation slides
  • Structure of presentation
  • Signposting important information
  • Starting the presentation: Self introduction, Purpose, Questions
  • Engage the participants: Body language, Interaction, Posture, Pausing, Gestures, Eye contact
  • Time allocation
  • Handling questions
Each participant would then be given time to revise and redeliver their presentation.
